BBC Language Courses
The culture of Continental Britain comes partly from the many language courses produced by the BBC, Linguaphone, and Teach Yourself books. All these companies are based in Britain! Here's some links to some courses, although some material for some of the courses is missing.
BBC "Avventura" Italian
This course was a good introduction to Italian, with a TV series featuring live action, as well as a comic strip, a book, and a vinyl record to accompany it. Here's a link to the vinyl record audio.
BBC Deutsch Direkt
This is a series teaching people about German by using live action scenes starting with very simple German, then working your way up.
What is English?
In the video above from the series "Mongrel Nation" Eddie Izzard buys a brown cow speaking Old English to a farmer speaking Frisian in the Netherlands. The traitor Nigel Farage called Eddie Izzard a FREAK during the EU Referendum campaign!
The English language is in the Indo European language family and in the Germanic group of that family. It is closely related to Frisian, Dutch, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Faeroese, and Icelandic. It's less closely related to the Romance languages such as French and Italian, but it has absorbed a large amount of French and Latin words, so that's why it sounds similar in some ways.
In Europe, nearly all the languages spoken are related in some way. This is because they're Indo European languages. The exceptions to this include Basque (which isn't related to any other living languages), as well as Finnish, Estonian, Sami/Lapp, Mordvin, and Hungarian, which all belong to another language family called Finno Ugric.
